After introducing the new Mercedes-AMG GT Concept in Geneva in 2017, the Germans transformed it into a ready for production vehicle. The name of the car is quite straightforward – the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

Despite its name, the car doesn’t use a platform from the AMG GT family supercars, but the platform from E-Class and CLS. At launch, there will be a base GT 53 model plus sportier GT 63 and GT 63 S variants. The GT 53 comes with AMG’s new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6-based mild-hybrid powertrain, which is good for 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.

The 63 models come with the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. The engine delivers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the GT 63 and 630 hp and 627 lb-ft in the GT 63 S. Further out we could see a GT 73 combining the V-8 with an electric motor for an output approaching 800 hp, but for now the GT 63 S reigns supreme. It will hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and top out at 195 mph.

All GT 4-Door Coupe models are fitted with a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, though the V-8 models also feature rear-wheel steering. There are some differences, however, between the V8 and inline six variants. Both the 63 and 63 S get the MCT gearbox with a wet clutch to better handle the extra power and torque, while the 53 features the TCT transmission and a more conventional torque converter.

What does all this mean in terms of performance? The GT 63 S should hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. The GT 63 will do the same sprint in 3.3 seconds, with the 53 clipping the mark in 4.4 seconds.

Each of the cars will receive a package of active aerodynamics, which includes a functional air panel in the front bumper and a retractable rear spoiler. Models with V8 can also have an additional aerodynamic kit, that will improve the front splitter and rear diffuser. The GT 63 also uses a pneumatic suspension instead of a spring suspension, has a thruster on the rear axle and more powerful brakes.

Despite all its power and technical twists, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is quite comfortable: there are five seats, two 12.3-inch screens, a luggage compartment for 395 liters (which can be increased to 1325 liters by folding the rear seats), and, of course, a lot of the most advanced security systems and all kinds of assistants, including Drive Pilot.
