Audi is preparing to launch its smallest SUV yet. The German brand is slated to launch Audi Q1 crossover sometime in 2020, according to a new report of the company.
According to Auto Express, Audi Q1 will be based on the next generation A1, the debut of which is expected this year. Both new crossovers will be based on the smallest version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, which is already found beneath the skin of the latest SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo. That means the Q1 will use the latest generation of petrol and diesel engines, which will include a three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol, a more powerful 1.5-litre unit, and a 1.6-litre diesel. Despite the fact that Audi has not officially confirmed the production of this car, the constantly increasing demand for crossovers can “speed up” the Ingolstadt leadership.
“You cannot ignore the trend of the SUVs. The question is how wide and how deep we will drive our program with the SUV. Depending on the business opportunities, we decide on the future product portfolio. But don’t be surprised if in two or three years you do see the car, as we try to react fast to markets,” added Bram Shota, the British sales and marketing boss.
As the Q1 will use the MQB platform, it will share its petrol and diesel engines with other models in the VW family. Included in the range should be a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol, a 1.5-liter turbo petrol, and a 1.6-liter diesel. There’s a chance that some form of 48V mild-hybrid system could also be offered to Q1 customers.
Unfortunately, the Q1 won’t reach the United States as Audi’s local bosses have ruled out launching any models smaller than the A3 and Q3 in these parts. That’s why we also miss out on the Q2.
