Presenting the GT 4-Door Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show last month, Tobias Moers, the boss of Mercedes-AMG mentions another model that could soon complement the GT family.

Moers does not say which model will complement the new four-door and coupe with a roadster GT, but Autocar journalists believe that this will be the future rival of the Porsche Cayman. Moers also confirmed that the GT 4dr Coupé will get a 4.0-litre V8 hybrid powertrain with at least 800bhp in the future. The hybrid set-up, first seen in the concept version last year (pictured above), will become the flagship model for the car when it arrives in 2020. It is likely to use the ‘EQ Power+’ soubriquet and will be a direct response to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which currently has 670bhp and is good for 193mph.

“The market has a clear niche for a four-door GT. But we already have excellent “charged” versions of AMG crossovers, and it makes no sense to use them to make similar cars under our brand,” Moers quotes.

With the GT Coupe and the GT 4-Door Coupe, which are clearly aimed at the Porsche 911 and Panamera, and eliminating crossovers, the most likely rival of the future sports car remains indeed Porsche Cayman. And, by the way, it is quite possible that if the German company is now thinking about the third model of the GT family, its “followers” may appear in the future.

In his interview, Moers also confirmed that in the future the GT 4-Door Coupe will receive a hybrid power unit with a 4.0-liter V8 developing with at least 800 hp. The hybrid system, first demonstrated by Mercedes-AMG at the GT Concept in Geneva in 2017, will become the heart of the flagship car and will probably appear sometime in 2020.
