The wait is almost over: Formula-1 season will kick off the end of this week in Australia. The Mercedes-AMG safety car will be in charge of the safety of the peloton for 23 times in a row. The tradition was laid back in 1996 with a safety car based on the C36 AMG, now the role of the safety car will be executed by the GT R. And it will be the most powerful safety car in the history of Formula One.

Armed with a 4.0-liter V8 engine at 585 hp, this sports car is much more powerful and faster than its predecessor, the GT S, used during the 2015 through 2017 seasons.

“It is an absolute highlight in terms of driving dynamics and is one level higher up still than the AMG GT S of recent years. Of course, ideally the safety car should be deployed as rarely as possible – but when we have to safely bunch up the Formula 1 field and lead it around the track, we will be superbly equipped with the AMG GT R”, says Bernd Mayllander, acting as a driver of a safe-car in the F-1 since 2000.

Compared to the standard GT R, the Safety Car version is equipped with an optional Track Package, including carbon-ceramic brakes and roll-over protection. German supercar also received a special livery and additional lighting equipment in the area of the “bucket” on the roof. As they say in the company, the “flasher” was optimized in the wind tunnel to provide the best aerodynamic efficiency to the car.

Mercedes-AMG GT R has a pair of iPads in the saloon: broadcasting of the competitions is shown live on the left, there is an animated display of where the cars on the track are in real time and time on the circle on the right side.

In addition to the safety car, Mercedes-AMG will also be responsible for emergency medical assistance on the track. The role of the medical car is reserved for the C63 S Estate, which can accommodate up to three medics on board.
